Reimagining Prisons

Project

Project Second Chance, India

Date

2017

Location

North India

Lives Impacted

11,500+ incarcerated and formerly incarcerated individuals across multiple Indian states

Co-founded by Mohit Raj and Sudhir Yadav, IPS, ex-Director General of Delhi prisons, in 2017, Project Second Chance is an incubator for prison reformation models built by people with lived experience of incarceration. By supporting former prisoners to design scalable, evidence-based rehabilitation systems—schools, legal aid, helplines, and resource hubs—the project is reshaping how Indian prisons approach reform at a national level.

This work led to recognition as an Ashoka Fellow and Obama Scholar for building scalable, system-level prison reform in India
